Andi, Dirk, thank you for your replies so far.
I'm not sure I understand everything you said correctly, but I will try to state my intentions as clearly as possible.
I'm writing the book for a publisher. I came in contact with this publisher through someone from the Dutch Volvo Forum, who knew I am a writer AND into Volvo, for the publisher was looking for someone to write this book.
There will initially be 4000 copies printed in Dutch. In the event all copies will be sold, I will make some money out of it, a few hundred Euro's, maybe a few thousand, I have no idea. Definitely not a lot, compared to the time I'm going to put in it, considering I normally charge 50 to 60 euro's per hour for commercial copywriting. But who cares, it's a nice project and there will be a real book with my name on it!
The stories in the book will have to come from people who like the idea of being in a book like this, contributing to the joy of Volvo lovers buying and reading the book, and, obviously, contributing to my joy, because I can't make this book without them.
It will be impossible for the publisher to compensate participants financially. I do think it's customary to send a copy of the book to the people who provided me with the featured stories. Bear in mind, it will initially be in Dutch. If there is a market for an English and a German translation, that would be great, and if it comes to that, I'm sure the German people featured in the book will get a German copy as well.
Obviously, when I use someone's story, the name of this person will be mentioned in the book. The same goes for photographs.
So, am I a 'Privatmann'? Yes and no. This publication will not cost me any money, but it will cost me a lot of time. And you know what they say: time is money. But I'm not looking at it that way, I am a car lover, a petrolhead as the English call it, and I especially like classic Volvo's. I only have one car, the Volvo 240 estate in my first post, but I've had it for six years now. Before that, I had a 1987 240 DL estate for five years. During that time, I also had a Citroen 2CV and prior to my eleven Volvo-years I owned three Peugeots 404 in a row and a Peugeot J7 campervan for a total of fourteen years.
I hope I made clear that I'm not in it for the money - but I wouldn't say no to it either, if the book should be a succes - so I hope the same goes for the Volvo-owners who have something interesting to tell.
